‘The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.’
When Viscount Grey of Fallodon spoke these words on 3rd August 1914, little did he know how true they would turn out to be.

2014 is a year of memorial and will be remembered globally for the events of 1914 and the 4 years which followed – events which were to change the face of society, politics and war forever.

Our Anthology is not just our efforts at remembering the dead but is to honour them in recognition of the progress that the world has seen, in part, due to their sacrifice. – Progress in social equality and mobility, in education, in democracy.

For us 2014 is a particularly notable year as in August, the lights will go out at The Mount and when we re-open our doors in 2015 it will be as a co-educational, multi-cultural study centre, part of the Mill Hill Schools Foundation. A further progression for the next century

I am extremely proud of all our achievements as a community and see this book as evidence of what has been best in the progress of the last 100 years, on a local and global scale. In our multi-ethnic, multi-cultural educational hub we have together celebrated diverse achievements as citizens of the world, and as Mount Girls.’

‘We hope you enjoy our eclectic review of progress since 1914, presented in a range of media from war diary entries, to haiku; from art to astrological stories of exploration in between.

May we continue to turn on the lights.

–Catherine Cozens, Head Teacher

When we think of the Gothic of course many traditional images from literature spring to mind – not least vampires and castles, cobbles and wind-swept moors. But the Gothic embraces so much more than the Romantic and Victorian period. To younger generations it conjures a modern cult in music and dress, and film; to Historians the ancient Goths were a whole sub-culture inhabiting the Crimea and Germanic regions; whilst Medieval Europe fashioned Art and Architecture in its designation of the Gothic style. The universality of Gothic has meant that it has seen revivals and re-birth across time and space and has again been interpreted here in its widest form to cover the supernatural, mythical, historical and factual and resonates with qualities of hidden perspectives, of secrecy and dark, moody depths.

‘Gothic Tales’ has become a feast of extraordinary creativity demonstrating some wonderful research, craftsmanship, individuality and energy in the stories, poems, art and design contained in its pages. The essence of ‘The Mount’ is yet again demonstrated in the unique qualities that our girls bring to this community and the nurturing of their skills and celebration of their achievements under our roof is a matter of great pride to us.

Whilst the anthology is primarily a recipe book, we wanted to incorporate something more than this. As a TV dinner society it is our generation that is missing out on the sharing and communal aspects of traditional meals. What we have tried to convey through this collection is a taste of food from around the world from multi- cultural communities and world geographies. To beautify our creative oeuvres and further titillate your taste buds we have incorporated artwork from across the junior and senior years at the Mount School.

The Mount School is a multicultural community and we are proud to have representatives of almost every ethnicity and religion in the world as part of that community. Every pupil brings their own tastes and traditions with them and this anthology is an opportunity to celebrate that diversity, as the title reflects.

In the preface to the second Mount School Cook Book published in 1996, the Head Teacher at the time reflected on the many changes the school had seen since the publication of the first edition and predicted, accurately, that the third edition of a cook book would not appear until the 21st Century. Little did she imagine that it would take the form of an e-book! Our school has continued to grow and develop, as I hope the variety of recipes in this anthology demonstrates.

The recipes in this collection have been chosen for a variety of reasons. Some are served on special occasions, to celebrate or mark religious occasions. Others are everyday dishes, served to nourish family members and strengthen family bonds. All of them, though, have been chosen because they are greatly loved. I hope that you will try preparing many of them for your families and friends, and enjoy discovering for yourselves the pleasure they have given to others.

We hope you enjoy our mouth-watering creation.
