Dedication – For the two most important men in my life: My husband, Vasantha, for his love and encouragement; and my son, Kamal, for his wise comments and help with the action scenes.
All Vicki wanted to do was visit her homeland, Sri Lanka, to attend her sister’s wedding, and find out more about an orphanage she’d heard good things about. Instead, she’s forced into an illicit liaison with Alfie, her sister’s wealthy, arrogant and charming fiancé; finds herself drawn to Patrick, the tormented manager of the orphanage; and then discovers the orphanage to be a front for a child sex tourism racket. Vicki is determined to save her sister’s marriage, and the orphanage children – and to do it, she’s willing to put her career, even her life, on the line.
“Okay, my little sister,” he moved to stand close to her. “I’ll make a deal with you. I’ll stay married to Vino. Pretend all is well at the homecoming in Colombo. Even go to London as husband and wife.”
Vicki’s heart pounded with anxiety. Her teeth chattered. “And?”
“You must be my lover.”
“Your lover…?” Her voice caught in a sob. “No…no…I can’t do that, Alfie. You know that. I’d never… I can’t… I haven’t.”
She stood pinned in his gaze. “Of course – the Chelliah virgins.” The sculpted mouth turned up in an ice cold smile. “Okay, Vicki, I’ll meet you half way. You agree to meet me in London whenever I want. And I won’t make love to you till you ask me to. And you will, Vicki.” He ran a finger down the curve of her neck, until his fingertip rested on the pulse at her throat. Her heart raced at his touch. She ripped her eyes from his and turned her face away. “Pretty soon you’ll be begging me to make love to you little one.”
Vicki swallowed hard.
“And…” she stammered. “If I refuse this…this…this agreement?”
“I’ll annul my marriage to your sister, on the grounds of non-consummation, and go back to London.”
Her face contorted in fury. “You… you… bastard!” She spat the word out as she swung a punch at him.
He caught her fist in his left hand, wrapped his right hand around her waist, yanked her towards him, and kissed her. “An incorrigible one, remember?” he murmured, his tongue flicking over her lips. “You can’t help responding to me, my little sister. I want you in my bed. And I will have you in my bed. If I have to stay with Vino to do it, well then, that’s what I’ll do.”
He stepped back. “Well?”
Vicki closed her eyes. She was trembling. She wrapped her arms around her body. She would have to do it – would have to make herself available to Alfie – for her sister’s sake. It was a bittersweet decision. But she would do it on her terms.
She took a deep breath. She drew herself up, clenched her fists by her side. “Alfie,” she said, keeping her voice calm, low. “You think that just because you’re rich and gorgeous, every woman will fall on their face for you. But I can resist you, and I will. But if meeting you in London is the price to pay for my sister’s happiness, then so be it.”
Alfie clapped his hands – slowly. “Bravo! Fighting words, little sister. I can’t wait to get back to London. Now, before I go back to my dear virgin wife, let’s seal our Bulatwatté agreement with a kiss.”
